World Book Day is fast approaching and we would like to share with you the exciting things we have planned.

Wear Your Pyjamas for School!

It is often said one of our favourite places to read is in bed, so we would like your child to celebrate reading, authors and illustrators by wearing their favourite pyjamas to school on the 2nd of March 2017. We hope this will help your child feel relaxed and put them in a “Reading for Pleasure” frame of mind.

Poetry Challenge

In addition, we will be launching the Poetry Performance Challenge; all children need to learn a poem off by heart. Children will then perform the poems to their class, who will vote for the best performance. The person with the most votes will be chosen to represent their class in the whole school performance on the 31st March 2017. Your child will have a greater chance of success if you can practise and rehearse the poem at home.

Book Swap

Finally, for World Book Day we would like to organise a Book Exchange Day, a new way for your children to find a great book to read, to recycle books they've finished with and to encourage reading for pleasure. Book Exchange Day is for children to swap a book for a one they have not read before. The book they choose will be theirs to take home and keep.

If your child would like to take part all s/he needs to do is bring a book that they are willing to swap by the 1st of March 2017.

Donated books must be in reasonable condition (lightly used, second hand books are ideal). Donated books should be appropriate for children aged 4-11. They can be picture books, chapter books, fiction or nonfiction, books children may read on their own, or books to be read aloud by an adult.  Exchanged books may be kept forever so please make sure your child does not donate any book that they will want back.

Shirley Manor’s Book Exchange is all about supporting children in developing a love of reading for pleasure.  We hope our Book Exchange will provide a small way of helping children to read a range of books without incurring any cost, as well as learning about the value of recycling.

We really appreciate your support and hope to make Shirley Manor’s World Book Day a great success.

Yours Sincerely

Mrs J Naughton
